What inspired you to open your own business?/ What passion drove you to your business?

Working in the child & youth care field for 6+ years with a focus on developmental, physical, and behavioural disabilities I reached a point where I craved a different type of challenge. After multiple trial-and-errors of career endeavours, Get Sorted Ottawa came to fruition. My passion is working with people in my community and using strength-based approaches to life’s many challenges. Guiding people in the organized and clutter-free direction brings me so much joy. I genuinely love working with my clients and I’ve stated on many occasions that when their space is organized and decluttered, I feel like my own home is transformed as well. Decluttering can be an emotional process for some – it can be overwhelming, stressful, anxiety-inducing, sad, exciting– it’s fascinating how we become so attached to material objects or how most of us experience over-consumption at some point in our lives. I’m dedicated to providing non-judgmental and strength-based organizing and decluttering services. I empathize with my clients and assure them that their space will be harmonious again. I certainly hope that I will be able to continue Get Sorted Ottawa for many years to come.

And, quite honestly, I always wanted to run a local business and be my own boss!

Tell us about your background—how have your experiences shaped who you are today?

I have a Bachelor’s in Social Work and a background in Visual Arts & Anthropology. I have lived in Ottawa my entire life, but I have moved dozens of time – I understand the moving process very well and from a very young age I learned the art of decluttering and non-attachment. I see the value in letting go of material objects when necessary – and, giving back to your community in any form (within your means). I’ve had the opportunity to travel and work in a plethora of environments such as private family homes, hospitals, high schools, group homes, cafes & restaurants – some short and long term, but all provided valuable experience. I recognize my ability to adapt to my environment and I take a genuine interest in everyone I connect with.

What is your favourite part about your job? What is the biggest challenge?

My absolute favourite part of my job is the positive reactions I receive from my clients – watching the sense of relief and stress disappear is truly humbling. Since I spend a lot of time in Ottawa folk’s homes, I naturally learn a lot from each person or family – there are so many kind-hearted people in Ottawa! The biggest challenge can be when clients are not ready to let go of (excessive) items that do not serve them a purpose anymore – again, there is no shame, but the process can certainly take time and is a reality.

What is your favourite corner of your own home and why?

My office - it’s where I work and create!

How do you stay inspired?/ What inspires you?

I stay inspired through my clients and the transformations I witness weekly! Get Sorted also collaborates with an Ottawa-based charity called, Helping With Furniture – they provide gently-used furniture and household items to individuals and families in Ottawa – it is reassuring to many of my clients because their donations are literally changing lives because their clutter is making an impact.

What do you love most about living in Ottawa?/ Favourite place in the city?

I have lived in Ottawa my entire life – it has so many hidden gems, I am constantly discovering new communities and restaurants to appreciate. I must be honest, I underestimated Ottawa when I was younger, but as I get older I find more reasons to love my home city.

What are you reading, watching, or listening to right now?

I am reading Unlearn: 101 Simple Truths for a Better Life by Humble the Poet.I am watching This is Us. I am listening to so many artists…IBEYI, Adele, and Majid Jordan, to name a few.

How do you unwind at the end of the day?

I have a very scattered schedule, when I have some down time I take my dog (Groot) to the trails for a walk – being outside in nature with Groot (and, other folks & dogs) is so therapeutic.
